    Kindness Matters

In February, Mrs Rowley went to a Headteacher conference and spent time listening to John Magee talk about his ‘Kindness Matters ‘ programme. As Mrs Rowley listened she knew that many, many of the principles around kindness were already embedded into the vision and ethos at St. Paul’s. Keen to know more about the ‘Kindness Matters’ programme she contacted John a couple of weeks later. Mrs Rowley decided that she would love the pupils (and staff) at St. Paul’s to take part in the 30-day challenge.

In May 2023 St. Paul's took part in a Kindness Matters super launch day. John Magee, came to St. Pauls and did a whole school assembly based on the principles behind his book 'Kindness Matters'.  He followed this by workshops in every year group across the school Y1 – Y6.

Mrs Rowley signed up to the programme and the Kindness Matters 30-day challenge started after the May half term. Children in Y3 to Y6 had an individual kindness journal which they completed every day of the 30-day challenge. Every morning they would watch a short video clip from John introducing that days kindness challenge. Children in Y1 and Y2 also took part in the challenge but recorded their acts of kindness on sugar paper and class call out sheets.

On Thursday 13th July Mrs Rowley held an assembly for the whole school where she asked children to show or read out all the kind things they had been doing over 30 days. The kindness examples were amazing and could be seen born out around school in lived experiences. Every child in the school will receive a Kindness Matters Certificate for the amazing kindness they show everyday in school.

Well done to everybody for showing such kindness all day every day.

This makes St. Paul’s  the 1st

    Kindness Matters School in Salford,

a fact that everybody is hugely proud of.

What were the benefits of the Kindness Matters Programme:

    • Supports positive mental health and wellbeing
    • Strengthens essential positive relationships with pupils and staff
    • Covers the important PSHE curriculum
    • Contributes to the wellbeing of both pupils and staff
    • Promotes positive social interactions and develops a culture of respect through values-based learning
    • Impacts the school and the wider community

Positive psychology is at the heart of all our courses to support the mental health and wellbeing of all pupils and staff.”

    John Magee, The Kindness Coach

    Mindfulness based psychology

    Behaviour is all about relationships

Some Kindness Matters quotes to think about:

    • The past doesn’t equal the future
    • People with anxiety live in the future it is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped
    • Whether you think you can or think you can’t …you’re right
    • The greatest test is being kind to unkind people
    • If killing them with kindness doesn’t work, then bury them with a smile
    • Be rich in kindness – start with kindness to yourself
    • Do something for yourself everyday
    • Time blocking – ½ /1 hour a day

    Dear Parents/Carers

On a warm day we know it’s tempting to head for lakes, rivers or other open water including Salford Quays to cool off in the water.

But – do you and your children know the dangers?

Even on the hottest day the open water at is cold. As soon as you go in, your body will go into cold water shock. It’s a natural, automatic reaction and you can’t avoid it.

Over 700 people drown in the UK and Ireland every year and drowning is one of the highest cause of accidental deaths in children.

Safety facts they may not appreciate:

    • Cold water can kill. Rivers, reservoirs and the Quays are cold even on the hottest days.
    • Jumping from any height into cold water automatically sends your body into shock; you can’t help but gasp
    • Cold water shock instantly makes you gasp and breathe faster which increases the risk of getting water in

your lungs, particularly if you’ve jumped in from high up.

    • Cold water shock can make you panic, increasing the risk of you swallowing water and drowning. It can also cause heart failure – even in young people – and quickly numbs your muscles, making it harder to swim and rescue yourself.
    • It only takes half a pint of water in the lungs for a full grown man to drown; children and young people are much more at risk
    • You don’t know what’s under the surface; you could get caught or hurt and drown

That’s why people should never jump into cold, open water or swim outside supervised sessions with lifeguards. If you do you’re relying on family/friends/members of the public to rescue you if you get into trouble.

That’s why it’s against the law to swim in open water and in particular at Salford Quays for your own safety unless you’re taking part in an organised and supervised swimming session with advice on managing cold water shock and lifeguards to look out for you.

We want people to enjoy visiting picturesque places with open water, lakes, rivers and canals but we want you and your children to stay safe at all times.

Please make sure you and your children understand the dangers of cold-water shock and are not tempted in this hot weather and stay out of any deep, open water.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mrs. J Rowley

  • Household Support

    Thu 17 Feb 2022 Mrs J Rowley

    Salford Council Household Support Fund

Salford City Council are excited to announce the launch of the new Household Support Fund funded by the Department for Work and Pensions.

Vulnerable households in Salford will be able to access the new Household Support Fund to help them with essentials over the winter months as the country continues its recovery from the pandemic.

The new Household Support Fund is intended to support households and families in Salford and will be distributed by Salford City Council's Salford Assist team.

The support will mostly be awarded by way of a grant payment to those eligible to assist with things like:

    • purchasing food
    • financial support for energy, water and utility bills
    • help to keep homes warm over the winter months
    • other essential items and support

Salford City Council are committed to ensuring vulnerable residents are supported in the best way possible and the new Household Support Fund will mirror the support Salford City Council offer via their Discretionary Support Scheme - Salford Assist, in the way that all reasonable requests for support will be considered. This could be for:

    • household items
    • white goods, carpets
    • thermal curtains to keep homes warm

Salford Assist will also help with referrals to other agencies to ensure you are getting the help you need.

Salford residents do not need to be in receipt of benefits to apply for the Household Support Fund, it is expected however that applicants are prepared to provide evidence that they do not have the funds themselves to purchase the items requested.

  • Christmas Performances 2021

    Wed 01 Dec 2021 Mrs J Rowley

    Christmas Events and Performances 2021

Currently we are still hoping to be able to invite Parents/Carers into school to watch the Christmas Performances. We can only do this with your continued support to keep everybody safe.

Public Health Advice has asked that schools consider a number of factors to ensure a COVID safe environment for welcoming visitors to Christmas events. In order to be able to have parents/carers in school to watch our Christmas performances and Nativity’s the following restrictions will apply:

    • We must limit the size of the audience by:
      • Limiting the number of visitors e.g. 1 ticket per pupil which will be ordered in advance by returning the order slip. NO tickets will be given out after the date specified and NOBODY will be allowed entrance on the day without a ticket under any circumstances.
      • Plan smaller events e.g. one school year per event where possible

    • All Parent/Carers should be asked to take Lateral Flow Tests before attending
    • All Parent/Carers must wear face coverings throughout the event unless they are exempt
    • The school hall will be kept well ventilated, with the windows and doors open if weather permits
    • Parent/Carers will be asked to maintain social distancing whenever possible, including queuing up to enter and leave the school building
    • Parent/Carers will enter the event space by the school hall doors on the playground which is the most direct route rather than walking through the school
    • Parent/Carers will be sat socially distanced in the hall with a space between all seats

It is important to note: Any class(es) that are part of an outbreak at the time of the event cannot take part, but the rest of the school can. The class(es) that are part of the outbreak must not use the event space for 24 hrs prior. If we have multiple outbreaks across 4 or more year groups we may be asked by Public Health England to cancel the event due to such widespread transmission.

Please ensure you all understand that these precautions have been put in place due to increasing COVID rates across Salford and the rest of the UK.  We want to protect children, staff and their families so all can stay well and have a wonderful Christmas.

Thank you for your ever continuing support in these difficult times.

  • Children's Mental Health Week

    Fri 29 Jan 2021 Mrs J Rowley

Children’s Mental Health Week 2021 - Express Yourself

Place2Be launched the first ever Children’s Mental Health Week in 2015 to shine a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. Now in its seventh year, we hope to encourage more people than ever to get involved and spread the word.

From 1-7 February 2021 schools, youth groups, organisations and individuals across the UK will take part in Children’s Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is Express Yourself.

Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good.

It’s important to remember that being able to express yourself is not about being the best at something or putting on a performance for others. It is about finding a way to show who you are, and how you see the world, that can help you feel good about yourself.

For Children's Mental Health Week 2021 we will be encouraging children (and adults) to explore the different ways we can express ourselves, and the creative ways that we can share our feelings, our thoughts and our ideas.

Around three children in every primary school class has a mental health problem, and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement. Whether you’re someone who works with childrena parent or carerpassionate about spreading the word, or keen to raise vital funds for Place2Be, you can help us reach as many people as possible.
