LEARNING to make a difference

Autumn 1

Autumn Term 1

In the first half-term, our topic theme is Survival.

Our class reader is Holes by Louis Sachar. It is a powerful text that follows the misfortunes

of Stanley Yelnats. We will be using this as a stimulus

later this half-term for our writing.

What did you think of the book? Did you like the ending? What do you think would happen next?

In our first English unit, we will be producing biographies about Bear Grylls.

Do you know any facts about Bear Grylls?

Our published biographies are on display in the entrance to Year 6.

After these biographies, we wrote informal letters based on our class reader Holes.

We pretended to be Stanley and wrote letters to his mum to explain how he was coping at Camp Green Lake.

We tried to use American phrases and informal 'slang' vocabulary.

We also told white lies to his mum to show her that he was happy and safe - the complete opposite to what life is like at Camp Green Lake!

Our informal letters are all on display in the Y6 entrance and in the training room.
