Home Learning Tasks – Spelling
This week’s spelling rule is adding the suffix -ation, -tion, -ssion, -cian.
These endings all make a shun sound, but are spelt differently.
Do you know what a suffix is?
A suffix is a group of letters that go at the end of a root word, changing or adding to its meaning. A suffix can show if a word is a noun, an adjective, an adverb or a verb.
What do you think the most common suffix is?
The most common suffix is -tion.
-ation is used to turn a verb into a noun.
-tion is used to turn a verb into a noun.
-ssion is used to turn a verb into a noun.
-cian is used to turn a verb into a noun.
Task: All these words have a shun sound at the end. Can you choose the correct suffix and put these words in the correct columns? Can you think of any of your own ‘shun’ words?
