Changes during the Victorian Era
Life at the beginning of the Victorian era was quite different to life at the end of the Victorian era. In 1837, most people lived in villages and worked on the land. By 1901, most people lived in busy towns and worked in factories, shops, and offices. During the 64 years of Queen Victoria’s reign, the population more than doubled from 16 million to 37 million. This meant that there was a higher demand for food, clothes, and housing. The development of the railways allowed for new foods to be brought from towns and cities.
