Text 4 -ANGLO SAXON KINGS

Edward the Confessor

Reigned AD 1042-1066

Edward came to the throne after 27 long years of Danish rule. His reign was peaceful and Edward devoted himself to religion.

Ethelred the Unready

Ruled 978 to 1013 & 1014 to 1016

Ethelred wasn't a very successful king. There were many clashes with the Danes during his reign. He was forced into exile in Normandy,

Athelstan

Ruled 924 to 939

In 927, Athelstan conquered York, the centre of the last Viking kingdom. This made him the first Anglo-Saxon king to rule over the whole of England.

Edgar the Peaceful

Ruled 959 to 975

Edgar became king when he was just 16 years old. He wasn't a warrior king like his ancestors and his reign was mostly peaceful. He built new monasteries and created new laws to help him rule

Edward the Elder

Ruled 899 to 924

King Edward was a bold soldier who won large portions of land from the Danes. Edward set up his court in the city of Winchester and built a fine cathedral there.

Alfred the Great.

Ruled 871 to 899
