LEARNING to make a difference

Week 4

Week 4: Writing Tasks

Task 1: Last week, we created a character description for this little boy. This week, we are going to look at creating a setting description so that next week we can begin to write our own story! Have a look at this Anglo Saxon Village. I want you to brainstorm some ideas about this village. Think about:

  • What is the name of your village?
  • What is the weather like?
  • How many people live there?
  • What is the atmosphere like? Is it busy?
  • What can you hear?
  • What can you see?
  • What can you smell?
  • What can you feel?

Task 2:

Using your ideas that you brain stormed about the Anglo Saxon village yesterday, write or talk about a setting description all about him! Use all the descriptive devices that we have been learning about: ing/ed/simile openers, relative clauses, parenthesis, adjectives, commas in a list, cohesive devices etc. Have a look at my example for some help but remember to use your own ideas!

The village of East Thor is full of hustling and bustling villagers. As muggy as the Amazon Rainforest, the hot air makes carrying out essential chores (done by adults and children alike) almost impossible. Lingering in the air is the smell of a burning fire and fresh food cooking. Nestled amongst all of this is the calming swishing sound of the lake, used for essential food and water by the villagers. As I walk through East Thor, I can feel the straw like grass underneath my bare feet and the sweat dripping underneath by heavy, steel, protective helmet.
