LEARNING to make a difference

Wb 18.1.21

The Rich Young Man. (Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30)

(The story has been written in a way that helps children understand better)

The rich young man

Once a man went running to Jesus, knelt down on his knees and asked him.

“Good teacher, what should I do to be certain of eternal life?”

“Only God is truly good but to answer you, let me remind you of the commandments. They say do not murder, do not steal, do not lie, do not cheat and honour your parents.” Jesus replied.

“I have followed all these commandments since I was a child,” said the young man.

Jesus felt love for the young man and wanted to help him.  Jesus said, “Then there is only one thing you are missing. Sell everything you own and give it to the poor and follow me. You will have a great treasure in heaven.”

But the young man was wealthy and didn’t want to give it up. Disappointed, he walked away.

Answer the following question about the story and about change. These answers are your opinions and thoughts so there are no right or wrong answers. Try to explain your answers.

  1. Why was the man sad when he heard what Jesus said? Do you think he did give up everything?
  2. Is changing easy? Why?
  3. Would it be easy to give up everything and follow Jesus? Why?
  4. What kind of things do change our lives? Have you moved house? Had a younger brother or sister? What else could change in our lives?
  5. How could you change personally? What would you change to help Jesus save people? Would you give up your money or games? Would you change your behaviour? Would you try to help people more?
