LO: To know how to subtract with 2-digit numbers .

Today we are going to subtract a 2-digit number from another 2-digit number.

You will need a pencil and square paper, your number square will also be helpful if needed (to help counting in tens).

We are going to look at 38 – 13 =

We are going to use ‘chips and peas’

Remember chips represent tens and peas represent ones.

First draw chips and peas to represent the largest number.

You will not need to draw both numbers.

First we look at taking away the ones.

8 ones – 3 ones = 5 ones.

Then take away the tens.

3 tens – 1 ten = 2 tens.

The answer is 2 tens and 5 ones which equals 25.

Using this method, have a go at these. Remember you only need to draw chips and peas to show the largest number in the calculation.

34 - 13 =           67 - 17 =          27 - 15 =           42 - 21 =

49 - 17 =              64 - 22 =          46 - 24 =         38 - 27 =

If you found these ok have a go at these:

37 - 31 =       45 - 34 =     59 - 22 =     66 - 44 =

Challenge:

Beth has 54 books and Jordan has 21.

How many more books does Beth have?
