On Wednesday 26th September, we had a visit from Mr B at Balestra Workshops to enhance our 'Evolution and Inheritance' Science topic.
We learned about:
· The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection
· The work of famous scientists – Charles Darwin and Mary Anning
· What the fossil record is and how fossils are made
· How the human body evolved into its current shape.
The Origins of Man
We learned how humans evolved over millions of years from Homohabilis, to Homoerectus, to Homoneanderthals to Homo sapiens today.
Darwin’s Theory of Evolution
Darwin discovered that the differences in offspring of living things (called variation) gave them different chances of survival in different conditions called natural selection. Over millions of years, this creates completely new species, which he called the ‘Theory of Evolution’.
Or in other words, if you fit the place you are born in better than the other creatures around you, you will live longer!
Louisa and Will played a game to show this by seeing how effective different beaks were for eating ping pong balls.
We learned how fossils were made and we were shown some WOW fossils that Mr B had collected. We then worked in groups to complete some fossil activities.
We went round in groups to:
